If you’ve priced a new air conditioner or heating system lately, you’ve probably noticed the numbers are higher than they were a few years ago. That isn’t a temporary spike. Industry leaders say higher equipment prices are here for the foreseeable future, and that matters for anyone in Cypress, Katy, Spring, or the greater Houston area who has an older system.
Here’s what’s behind it and how to plan around it.
What the Industry Is Saying
At a major industry conference this fall, two of the largest HVAC manufacturers in the country said residential demand has picked up and is meeting or exceeding expectations. Busier doesn’t mean cheaper, though. Both manufacturers said price increases are necessary to offset higher input costs, including tariffs and other inflationary pressures. achrnews
One manufacturer cited increased input costs, including tariffs, fuel, copper, steel, and aluminum, and said it may consider additional out-of-cycle increases. Another has already implemented two residential increases this year, effective April 1 and July 1, both for up to 5%, and expects cost pressure to continue through the rest of the year. achrnewsachrnews
Equipment costs have also climbed sharply over the longer term. An industry analyst noted that the average residential replacement was just over $6,000 at the beginning of 2020, and is now closer to $12,000. achrnews
Why This Matters for Your Home
Houston-area air conditioners work harder than most in the country. Long, humid summers mean more run hours, more wear, and a shorter lifespan than the same unit would see up north. If your system is 12 to 15 years old, you are likely closer to a replacement decision than you think, and waiting for a breakdown in August is the most expensive way to make it.
What Homeowners Can Do
1. Repair first when it makes sense.
Not every problem calls for a new system. A failed capacitor, contactor, or blower motor can often be repaired for a fraction of the cost of replacement. At Texas Star Heating & Cooling, we take a repair-first approach and give you an honest assessment of whether a repair is a sound investment for your system’s age and condition.
2. Keep up with maintenance.
Regular maintenance is the most affordable way to protect your equipment. Clean coils, proper refrigerant charge, and tested electrical components help your system run efficiently and last longer, which delays the cost of replacement.
3. Plan replacement on your schedule, not your system’s.
If your system is aging, needs frequent repairs, or still runs on R-22 refrigerant, it is worth getting replacement pricing now. Planning ahead lets you compare options, consider financing, and schedule the installation during a mild season instead of in an emergency.
4. Know that prices are unlikely to drop.
With manufacturers signaling continued increases, waiting for prices to come down is not a reliable strategy. If replacement is in your near future, today’s price is likely the lowest you will see.
